Project Examples
Georgia Institute of Technology - Klaus Advanced Computing Building
This 300,000-square-foot classroom and research building is seeking certification under the US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) rating system. This project has required Southface to research strategies relevant to sustainable practices on a campus environment and to work with a diverse design team on setting and executing environmental goals. Southface is serving as the LEED administrator.
Atlanta Community Food Bank
As a deliverable for a grant from the Blank Family Foundation, Southface created a Green Building Toolkit to assist non-profit organizations construct high performance buildings. The Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) is serving as the primary case study for the toolkit. Southface conducted a design workshop, or charrette, for the ACFB, provided training for the design team, performed energy modeling, and is serving as the LEED administrator.
Atlantic Station
Southface conducted a mid-project sustainable design assessment and helped identify green building goals for this 130-acre mixed-use development in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, Southface is developing site-wide LEED documentation and a Green Design Handbook to augment the LEED and EarthCraft House™ rating systems for all participating developers.
Four Family YMCAs
The YMCA has contracted with Southface for LEED administration duties for new recreation facilities in a planned sustainable community development and in urban infill sites. A charrette has been completed and workshops to instruct the team further on their responsibilities have been conducted. One of the YMCA facilities is currently completing construction and the three others are beginning construction.
A.M. Blank Family Office
At the request of the Blank family and the foundation leadership, Southface guided the design team through an evaluation of environmental goals for a 40,000-square-foot office building. Southface conducted a charrette, performed LEED research and cost analysis, and advised on LEED and green building principles throughout the design development phase.
Arabia Mountain Environmental School Project
Southface is the environmental consultant for the first high performance “EnergySmart” public school in Georgia. This Dekalb County high school will employ daylighting technology, high efficiency HVAC and lighting technology and is positioned to minimize site impact.
IKEA Stoughton, MA & IKEA Brooklyn, NY
To help bring the environmental performance of IKEA’s buildings more in line with their strong overall company environmental policy, Southface is performing LEED administration on two Northeastern IKEA stores. In Stoughton, Southface assisted in creating a design that lessened its impact on a smaller township outside Boston. The Brooklyn IKEA is performing clean-up on a contaminated brownfield site adjacent to the Erie Basin, removing old piers, and restoring some of the original open water conditions.
Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School
Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School has chosen to make environmental stewardship a part of the culture and values of their students. Southface conducted a charrette for Mt. Vernon, provided training for the design team, performed energy modeling, and is serving as the LEED administrator on the construction of their Upper School Campus building.
Energy Audits and Performance Assessment
Southface has conducted numerous energy audits for commercial buildings including office buildings, places of worship, assembly places and schools. Southface is skilled with a variety of energy modeling tools and conducts energy code compliance reviews.
Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority
GEFA has contracted with Southface to develop a series of fact sheets on energy and environmental technologies for commercial buildings. In addition, GEFA and Southface co-host the annual Greenprints Sustainable Design Conference which focuses on commercial green building design and construction.
U.S. Department of Energy
DOE and Southface partner on a broad range of education and technical assistance projects including Commercial Building Energy Codes, Million Solar Roofs, Building America, Federal Energy Management Program’s Greening Federal Facilities, Greenprints, EarthCraft House, and EnergySmart Schools. The DOE has contracted with Southface to provide technical assistance on green design to several nonprofit organizations, local governments and schools. In addition, DOE has contracted with Southface to facilitate interactive planning workshops on energy policy, distributed energy, cogeneration and multi-modal transportation.
Environmental Protection Agency
EPA has funded Southface to provide environmental design assistance on several projects ranging from a mixed-use development for Miami-Dade County Public Housing Authority to an Atlanta facility providing hospice services for AIDS patients.
Army Environmental Policy Institute
Southface conducted an energy audit of a barracks for Fort McPherson and conducted a two day green building charrette for the redevelopment of a former hospital. Southface also participated in several policy discussions concerning sustainable development guidelines for the U.S. Army.
