This three-day online course is designed to introduce the skills necessary to become a Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier, certified to perform the diagnostic testing required for new homes by the 2009 and 2012 IECC amendments (content updated for new Georgia 2020 energy code).
An in-person evaluation will also occur and require those attendees seeking certification to schedule a time to complete it, unless the instructor can coordinate a virtual evaluation if students have the necessary equipment. COVID-19 protocols will be enforced to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved.
December 2-4 (Register)
Join these short info sessions to learn about the benefits to becoming DET certified. We’ll also cover the course schedule, content, and format. Southface’s expert training staff will be able to answer any questions that you may have!
November 13 (Register)
In this Certified DET Verifier course, you will learn the basic building science concepts and math skills related to air leakage, duct leakage and ventilation in homes. This will allow you to conduct leakage tests in new homes as part of the IECC testing requirements for air-tightness of the envelope and duct work. In existing homes, you can offer retrofit sealing of ducts, walls, floors and ceilings to improve comfort and reduce utility costs for homeowners. Specific topics include:
CEUs: AIA 16 LU, BPI 8 units, ICC 1.4 CEUs
Certifications: Duct and Envelope Tightness Verifier. To achieve designation as a DET Verifier, a student must receive a passing score on both exams (included in tuition costs).
Mike Barcik is a Technical Principal at Southface and has been with the organization since 1995. With B.S and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, Mike is the author of numerous technical resources and has developed and led thousands of trainings for RESNET, BPI, LEED, DOE, EPA and other programs. He’s active in energy code development and often leads workshops on the latest code changes. Since 1999, Mike has trained over 1,500 individuals in RESNET’s Home Energy Rating System (HERS) program, and in 2010 he helped create the Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier program to certify over a thousand individuals for blower door and duct leakage testing, as required by the 2009 and later energy codes. Mike served as LEED Faculty for BD+C, EB O&M and Homes, as well as helped develop and teach the EarthCraft family of sustainable programs. Mike co-authored Decatur Georgia’s High Performance Building Ordinance which requires third-party certification for new and substantially renovated single-family, multi-family and commercial projects.
