In the wake of two deadly hurricanes within the past two weeks, we join our families, friends, and colleagues in mourning unimaginable loss and offering our heartfelt support.
We won’t know the full extent of the destruction caused by Hurricane Milton for some time, but there are already 12 confirmed deaths and more than 3 million people without power. What we do know is that Milton is one of Florida’s strongest hurricanes on record in terms of pressure, windspeed, and how quickly it intensified. Massive flooding and abnormally strong tornadoes have cost so many communities so much.
Hurricane Helene began to carve its devastating path across the Southeast only 13 days prior, but for those impacted, the nightmare is far from over. Across six states, hundreds of people have lost their lives and hundreds more are still unaccounted for. Whole neighborhoods in western North Carolina have been decimated with more than 100,000 residents still waiting for power to be restored.
At Southface, we are working to develop more resources for all communities to build their resilience to storms. We encourage everyone to continue to support frontline organizations and share resources for Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene survivors, especially for those in the hardest hit areas.

How to clean up safely after a disaster
As we look toward the future, it is important to reject nonstop natural disasters as our new normal. We are surrounded by opportunities to decarbonize Earth’s atmosphere and create a better, safer future for ourselves and generations to come. Building for resilience and de-escalating the climate crisis can no longer be treated as luxuries. We need to take action to protect the people and places we hold dear. It is a moral imperative. Let’s keep fighting the good fight as we join together to recover and rebuild.
