Georgia continues to make progress on the solar energy front. From the Solarize Decatur-DeKalb initiative that will give DeKalb homeowners and building owners the power of bulk purchasing, to Georgia Power’s recent commitment to provide 150 megawatts of distributed generation to smaller-scale solar projects, we’re keeping the solar momentum going.
Shan Arora, policy programs manager here at Southface, recently spoke with the Natural Resources Defense Council about his thoughts on distributed generation and how the South can gain the most from its mounting desire for energy independence.
“In Georgia, we’ve marketed to our audience that distributed solar is a property-rights issue, and we won on that,” said Shan. “No matter the property owners’ motivation, whether environmental, economic independence, or national security–related, they should have the right to generate electricity.”
Shan thinks that the term “Freedom Panels” used in the title of the article is fantastic. “The author of the article, Robynne Boyd, has perfectly encapsulated the sentiment through the term ‘Freedom Panels,’ because it gets to the heart of values that are important for Georgians: property rights and free-market principles.”
