The Southface Eco Office opened in 2009 and is constructed entirely from off-the-shelf products, materials and technologies. In keeping with our goal to remain on the leading edge of building science and sustainability, Southface refreshed the campus this spring to showcase new trends in materials and design.
The 2015 refresh was driven by a holistic approach to sustainability in our built environment. It was rooted in evidence-based design around enhancing health and well-being. A survey of Southface employees inspired decisions regarding materials, color selection and needs for flexible workspaces. Validated by third-party research in environmental psychology and biophilic design, the campus refresh seeks to create a built environment that is not only healthy and efficient but also allows occupants to thrive.
The refresh was completed in time for us to welcome members of the American Institute of Architects during their national convention in downtown Atlanta, May 13-16. The Southface campus was included on the convention tour schedule and more than 80 architects came through our buildings to see sustainable design in practice at the Eco Office and SWEET Center. The campus refresh allowed Southface to showcase the efficiency of our buildings while reiterating the impact design can have on well-being and productivity in the workplace.
Several members of the Southface staff also contributed to the AIA convention curriculum and presented on topics ranging from high performance residential case studies to the measured performance of small commercial green buildings. As a capstone to the week, Southface was the host site for the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awards for affordable housing projects. Friday night saw a celebration of the award-winning affordable housing projects and a gathering of industry and government leaders in the field.
