Atlanta, GA – October 30, 2019 – Southface Institute has been selected as a 2019 Leadership Award recipient by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Southface joins 19 others who are using green building and sustainable practices to improve quality of life for those around them. Southface President Andrea Pinabell will accept the award at the USGBC Leadership Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at the 2019 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Georgia.
“This award recognizes your leadership over more than four decades in building better communities that improve human lives,” wrote USGBC President and CEO Mahesh Ramanujam. “Southface is a recognized leader throughout the Southeast in sustainability, and each and every day you are actively working to promote sustainable homes, workplaces and communities through education, research and advocacy. Southface has made significant contributions to advancing the national conversation on resiliency, resource conscious lifestyles, the importance of innovative technologies in sustainability and clean energy, and the need to focus on carbon reduction and energy and water conservation in our buildings through building science,” he wrote.
In 1999, Southface became one of the first USGBC corporate members. It serves on the national faculty for the LEED programs for schools and homes. Southface staff serves on several USGBC committees, represents Georgia on the Regionalization Task Force for LEED ND and serves on the board of directors of the USGBC Georgia Chapter.
In 2006, Southface collaborated with USGBC to create the LEED for Homes certification program. It is a LEED for Homes provider and has since certified thousands of homes throughout the country. Southface has also brought dozens of commercial building projects to LEED certification, and it has trained close to 100 LEED Green Associates and LEED Green Raters who advance the spread of green building standards in the industry.
In 2009, Southface’s Eco Office achieved LEED Platinum-certification and has since served as an example of how to implement off-the-shelf materials and technologies to achieve a high-performance building. Hundreds of K-12 students, college students and professionals have toured the Eco Office to learn building science and sustainability best practices. These efforts contribute to Southface’s overall work promoting sustainable development and green building through education, research, advocacy and technical assistance, leading to healthier homes and communities.
